Introduction

My name is Alberto Milone, I graduated [1st level degree (equivalent to a BA) - December 2005, 2nd level degree (equivalent to a MA) - March 2008] in Foreign Languages (the name of the course was "Lingue Moderne per la Comunicazione Internazionale") at the Università del Salento. I was born in Turin in 1983 but I have spent most of my life in Lecce.

My current interests range from the study of the English language to (open source) software development on GNU/Linux distributions, for which I have an insane passion.

I work on a GNU/Linux distribution (based on Debian and developed by Canonical) called Ubuntu Linux. According to Canonical's webpage: "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". Ubuntu also means "I am what I am because of who we all are". The Ubuntu Linux distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

I have worked for Canonical since March 2009 as a Sustaining Engineer (System) in the OEM Services Group. I mainly deal with the X.Org side of Ubuntu for the OEM team so as to make sure that, for example, touchpads work properly on the laptops that are sold with Ubuntu.

My main fields of action in Ubuntu are:

  • (graphics) hardware enablement (kernel/X.Org hacking)
  • general software hacking (I can fix pretty much any app you throw at me, time permitting...)
  • maintenance of AMD and NVIDIA's driver packages
  • installation of non-free graphics drivers (previously Envy/EnvyNG and now Jockey)
  • improvement of user experience with X.Org (X-Kit, Synaptics driver, etc.)
  • smooth dist-upgrades with proprietary drivers (nvidia-common)
  • moderation on ubuntuforums.org (where I'm known as tseliot)

(for further information see the Projects page)

The first program - and probably the most popular program - that I wrote is Envy (now EnvyNG). The first distribution to adopt it was Linux Mint (a GNU/Linux distribution based on Ubuntu) version 2.1 codename "Bea" (December 20 2006). In 2008 EnvyNG was included in Ubuntu Hardy.

I have been an Ubuntu member (approved by the Ubuntu Community Council) since August 22 2006.
