  1. this is the first time i tried to install envy and it broke my glx, the old xorg.conf that uses nvidia-glx wont even work. the only thing that works is vesa

  2. I guess you have uninstalled Envy already.

Ok, here’s how you can restore your previous nvidia driver:

    1) Install Envy, then launch it and use the “uninstall” function.

    2) Reinstall nvidia-glx (or nvidia-glx-new) from Ubuntu’s repository and set the driver to “nvidia” in your xorg.conf.

    3) Restart your computer.

  3. i have tried that, i even tried to install the driver from nvidia.com
nothing help me get glx back. and my gnome session is broken.

  4. The fact that your gnome-session if broken is a different problem.

    Can I see your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

  5. ok, it’s libglx.so that seems to be causing the problem.

    type:
    ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/ > liblist.txt

then post the content of liblist.txt

  6. Type:
    sudo apt-get –purge remove nvidia-glx-new

    sudo apt-get clean

    sudo rm /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libnvidia-wfb*

    sudo rm /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libwfb.so

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new

    and restart your computer

  7. libglx.so is ok.

Set the driver to “nvidia” in the Section Device of your xorg.conf and restart your computer, then post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  8. Hello, I have a problem

    I have no accelaration:

    pierluc@pierluc:~$ glxgears
Xlib: extension “XFree86-DRI” missing on display “:0.0”.
    2071 frames in 5.3 seconds = 393.111 FPS
    2040 frames in 5.3 seconds = 384.596 FPS
    1312 frames in 5.6 seconds = 235.857 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

I think the driver do not run

  9. Captcha : win (I couldn’t resist)

I wasn’t gonna say anything but then I got the best captcha ever. On a side note, will there be any gutsy support for tribes, and if not, the final version? It runs pretty well at the moment without explicite support (e.g. modding the config files to force it to work) but compiz seems to freeze when I run anything 3D on it. Maybe it’s the driver, maybe it’s compiz. I can’t quite tell =(

    ENVY: Operation Completed

  12. hey Alberto,
    U’re doin gr8 job…
I’m totally noob at Linux, and had to reinstall it thrice(very painful affair) only beacuse of Nvidia problem. Whenever I installed Nvidia for my Fx 5200, I ran into trouble-> Xconf/Xorg doesn’t load – the Ubuntu progress bar stops at 10% and then nothing happens; and when I disable the Video Card -> I get Xconf/Xorg error and not able to load Ubuntu and logged in root -> so had to re-install.

I tried Using 1. restriced device manager (built in Ubuntu)-> it detects Nvidia Ge 5200Fx, installs them automatically and upon restart I get the above error.
    2. On reading in forums, I installed Nvidia drivers using terminal, directly from Nvidia source, installed and ended up the same.
    3. Tried using Automatix, it installs, and resulted in same error, but fortunately it gave/ attached a restore script with it (# automatix-nvidia-restore) by which i restored only original files/settings.

Does Envy provide such script?? If not, then what should i do to restore in case Envy doesn’t worked?? Also, do u suggest tryin it, as i already failed 3 times doin it?

    Please suggest and help.

My System Conf – P4 2.8, 865 Intel Based Chipset, 1 GB RAM, Nvidia Ge 5200Fx… Also, the Live CD – Ubuntu didn’t ran on NVidia, had to disable it, and forced to use motherboard based intel graphics..

    Thanx

    what happens if you type:
    sudo modprobe fglrx

    @Ashish
First of all I think might just need to add an option in your /etc/X11/Xorg.conf (once that you have installed the Nvidia driver).

If something goes wrong with Envy you can:

Boot in Recovery Mode (select it from the GRUB menu)

    type:
    envy -t

and select to uninstall the Nvidia driver (so as to restore mesa).

then restore the backup of your previous xorg.conf:
    cd /etc/X11/
    ls
    you’ll see xorg.conf and other backup files (e.g. xorg.conf_backup_200703022015)

    replace xorg.conf with a backup:
    cp name_of_your_backup_file xorg.conf

    then reboot by typing:
    reboot

  14. @Muki Key Oot

Captcha??? What are you talking about???

Anyway, Envy will support Gutsy when Gutsy is released.

In the meantime you can have a look at this post:

P.S. I have no idea of what can be causing your problem with Compiz. Maybe you should ask on Compiz’s forums

    type:
    sudo depmod -ae

    then type:
    ls /lib/modules/2.6.20-16-generic/volatile/fglrx*

and tell me what the command returns

  17. @pierluc
it’s ok to have nvidia modules there.

can you post the output of this command?
    sudo aptitude search fglrx
