Artwork Contest for EnvyNG

The reactions to the screenshots of the prototypes of EnvyNG 1.1.x were positive however some users (see the comments to my previous posts and this blog post ) led me into thinking that it’s time for me to change EnvyNG’s icon and logo.

I won’t draw a new icon and logo myself though. I wouldn’t define myself as skilled with the GIMP or Inkscape therefore I need your help:

  • If you are a designer (or you can use either the GIMP, Inkscape, etc.) you can send me an icon and logo (you can find my email address on my website) which reflect your idea of what EnvyNG should look like.
  • If you’re not a designer you can post a comment the artwork you think it’s more appropriate.

Requirements for the icons and logos:

  1. They cannot contain trademarked components (e.g. ATI or NVIDIA’s logos).
  2. Their license has to be GPL 2.
  3. The preferred size of the logo is (more or less) 550×133 pixels.
  4. The preferred file formats are “png” or (even better) “svg”.
  5. It would be better if the colours reproduce the look and feel of the old Envy, however you’re free to surprise me in this respect.

For further details you can have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions.

Two Italian users have already sent me their logos. Of course your (polite) feedback on this blog is more than welcome.

EDIT: the new galley is here

  1. Please just get rid of it, and ask for a nice program icon instead. It’s a waste of space, especially for an app that gets used by people that are sometimes stuck on small resolutions.

Having a huge banner like that isn’t really good for anything (we *know* we’re using Envy, it says so in the titlebar and we started the program ourselves, there’s no need to remind us).

  2. @Jonne
You will find the answer to you suggestion in the “Frequently Asked Questions”.

And you can always use the textual installer.

  3. I don’t see anything about the logo in Envy’s FAQ. Maybe you meant another FAQ? Please link to it.

I’ll repeat what I said in other comment: this big logo is too large and serves nothing. It’s useless. It makes envy unusable on smaller resolutions. It reminds me of some Windows programs.

Also, it is against Gnome Human Interface Guidelines.

Unnecessary window size bloat makes it harder to use on smaller screens.

Put the logo only in About tab/window/dialog. That’s the only place where you should put fancy stuff.

  4. @Jonne, Azrael

Is the use of a header really necessary to EnvyNG?
Of course not but I’m not going to remove it from EnvyNG. It’s good to be a sabdfl.

  5. Jonne and Azrael’s protests are insightful. Envy is likely to be run by users still stuck in low resolutions.

The decision of keeping the banner reminds me of many graphic card driver installers for windows, which are usually run in low-res (and 16-color), but displays giant colorful banners.

  6. 1 more vote for Pelloni’s logo. i like both the 1st and the 3rd option.

And BTW i kinda agree on what Jonne and Azrael have said.. maybe if you just reduce the banner in size (i think width is the most important) you could either satisfy your wish to keep the banner and avoid to make envy’s window uselessly large. I’m saying that because i had to use envy just yesterday and with a resolution of 640×480 it took the whole screen..and in most of times you use envy when you got in trouble with graphic drivers.. you know.. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Congrats for the app anyway, it saved me a lot of times on many installations..

  7. @Alberto:
While I don’t think that Envy is “ugly” without a logo (ok maybe it’d need some UI love), you may want to experiment with some smaller graphics, say 500×100. That way everybody should be happy ๐Ÿ™‚

    @all:
I’m not a fan of anti-HIG applications either, but one can also push for something different sometimes.

  8. Alberto: it’s not ugly. It’s perfect, just the way it should look like.
Would you like to see a big useless logo in every app you use? (Firefox, Evolution, Pidgin, OpenOffice, Glade, etc.)?
How come you don’t see such logo in any official KDE, Gnome, or even Mac application? (hint: they all have HIG)
You can have a big shiny logo in the about dialog – that’s where Firefox, OpenOffice and others have their big shiny logos.
